How to Find the Right Window Blinds

April 11th, 2010

No matter what kind of place you live in, be it an apartment or a house, you need window blinds. We take window blinds for granted as we hardly notice them. However if they were missing you would most definitely notice the difference! You would basically lose your privacy, especially after the sun goes down and your lights are on inside. Everyone will be able to see you inside your house!

Now that we’ve gotten through the obvious, which is that everyone needs window blinds or at least some kind of decent shades/covers, what choices do you have when it comes to purchasing the best type for your home? Well, here are a few of the main types you can choose from.

Vertical blinds are exactly what they sound like. They are blinds that have vertical vanes and are usually used for bigger windows and often times the sliding doors to the backyard. These are simple to maintain and easy to use, and many people have them. The standard white ones might be a little boring so if you are artistic, you may want to look for certain colors or designs other than the plain white type.

Not everyone likes vertical blinds. As a matter of fact, many people think vertical blinds are sterile and office-like and do not want that style in their homes. In that case, they might just go for big curtains.

Another type of blinds are the regular mini blinds, which are 1-inch vanes running horizontally, and are usually used in smaller windows. They are either made of plastic or aluminum for the most part.

While this is also pretty standard, some people don’t like these anymore, since there are so many more elegant, and pricey choices for window blinds out there today. Here are some of the better looking ones. For normal windows, to replace mini blinds, people typically use bigger borizontal blinds, which comes in various materials and colors. They do look much better in my opinion and here’s an example.

If you shop at your local Home Depot, you are probably limited to the styles they carry in the store. However, I believe they also have the more fancy ones at additional costs and requires their affiliated window blind specialists to come to your place and install it and all that good stuff. There are also many other alternatives to window blinds such as curtains, paper blinds, bamboo shades, but nothing comes close to the ease of use and versatility of window blinds.

Whether you are in the market to upgrade your window blinds or installing them for the first time in a new home, be sure to do your home work and decide on the feel you are going for, and from there you can decide whether the traditional window blinds are for you or the more fancy window blind alternatives tickle your fancy.
